Sri RamachandrapuraMatha

SriMatha was established by Adi Shankaracharya around 1300 years ago (8th century AD) in Ashoke, near Gokarna for the protection and propagation of Sanathana Dharma.

While traveling across the length and breadth of Bharat, HisHoliness AdiShankaracharya visited Gokarna and having sensed divinity of the place at Sri Mallikarjuna Temple at Ashoke, he established this Matha, which has seen thirty-five heads of Peetha since then. SriMatha has been adorned by pontiffs who are great Vedic scholars endowed with immense spiritual powers. Sri RamachandrapuraMatha has made remarkable contributions to the protection and propagation of Vedic education even during colonial rule of Bharat. This patronage went a long way in preserving the ancient traditions and knowledge handed down to us by our ancestors.

SriMatha has an unbroken lineage of enlightened and illustrious Peetadeeshas and the present pontiff SriSri Raghaveshwara Bharathi Swamiji is the 36th pontiff of this glorious lineage to preside over the august Peetha. Sri Swamiji is widely known for his efforts over the last two decades in preservation of Bharatiya breed of cows. Read More

Hence, Sri Matha is eminently suited to establish an institution of higher learning in the field of Bharatiya Knowledge Systems, Science and Arts because its primary aim is to inspire the youth to tread the path of righteous living through acquisition of Bharatiya value systems. It is the perseverance, farsightedness and guidance of Sri Sri Raghaveshwara Bharathi Swamiji that has led to the envisioning of a world-class group of institutions devoted to the understanding, dissemination and amalgamation of ancient Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) with contemporary knowledge fields.

Presently, SriMatha is actively engaged in establishing Vishnugupta Vishwa Vidyapeetha, a center for learning for all Baratiya heritage knowledge forms, be it vedas, shastras, puranas, various art forms etc. This institution is planned to be modeled after the Takshashila Vishwavidyalaya, where Acharya Vishnugupta studied and later on became its Head Acharya.

SriSri Raghaveshwara Bharathi Maha Swamiji, Sri Samsthana, Gokarna, has undertaken a massive reinstatement program of Moolamata at Ashoke, Gokarna. This sacred place, once abode of Sri Raghoottama Mata (now RamachandrapuraMatha), is where Jagadguru Shankaracharya founded our much revered Matha around 1000 years ago instructing Sri Sureshwaracharya to initiate Sri Vidyanandacharya to sanyasa and made him the Matadhipathi. He ordained: Atra Tishta Yati Shreshta Gokarne Munisevite …

Oh Sacred Yati, making this place your Headquarters, look after the affairs of Gokarna Devastanam and also the shishya bhakthas of Gokarna Mandala. What started on that day over a thousand years ago, has continued to grow and flourish. SriSri Raghaveshwara Bharathi Swamiji is the 36th Shankaracharya of this avicchinna parampara – unbroken lineage from Adi Shankara till the current Peetadhipati. (In other words, a Peetadhipathi appoints his “uttaradhikari” while he is still in the peeta and this link is unbroken). As you may be aware, only Ramachandrapura Mata is blessed with this privilege.

Over a period of time, Headquarters of the Matha was shifted to Hosanagara and this place was abandoned. As explained by Sri Samsthana in the linked youtube video, Moolamata remained only in name – “namaavashesha”. Even SriSri Raghavendra Bharathi Swamji, in his book “Aatma Vidyaakhyayika” remembers the origins of the Matha in the Shloka No. 32 as ‘Ashoke Namake Sthane Shankaraarya Sunirmite Mate Gokarna Nikate Mallikarjuna Sevite’ The reconstruction is being carried out using a mixture of organics called “gaare” and without any steel or cement. This method improves the longevity of buildings to above 300 / 400 years.
